An organization is only as good as its people. It is the job of personnel, training, and labor relations specialists to recruit and interview “good people,” guide them through the hiring process, and keep them happy once they’re on the job. Commonly known as “human resources” or “HR” specialists and managers, these individuals may be experts in employee compensation or employee benefits. Or they may be responsible for designing and administering programs to help employees improve their skills, knowledge, and job satisfaction. Other HR specialists specialize in mediating disputes and grievances or in negotiating with labor unions. Still others concentrate on international human relations for a company’s foreign operations. The best jobs in this highly varied field go to those with bachelor’s or master’s degrees in personnel-related subjects. And it goes without saying that excellent “people skills” are essential.
