Database Administrators Job Description video

In the beginning, there was the big, water-cooled "mainframe" computer housed behind glass walls, accessible only by a select few. Today, computing power is widely "distributed" throughout companies, thanks to "local area networks" or "LANs." Network administrators are the people responsible for managing it all, usually by controlling the network server. Database administrators have more specific duties. They are responsible for large files containing customer and product information. And their main goal is to make the information in a company's database files available to workers in the format that they need, whenever they need it. A college degree is not absolutely essential but is usually desirable. Often it is more important to be familiar with computer programming concepts, the relevant programming languages, and with the leading software packages. In some cases, it may be necessary to become "certified" by taking courses and passing exams to test your knowledge of a particular program. And, of course, it is essential to be able to keep up with the constant change in the computer field. That's a lot of work, but it leads to lots of opportunities. As more organizations computerize or install networks, the demand for database and network administrators will continue to grow. After all, these professionals are absolutely indispensable to all types of businesses, institutions, and governments – large and small!
