America is a nation on the move. But traveling can be stressful and confusing. That’s where Transportation Attendants come in. They help people have a safe and comfortable journey. These attendants can usually be found at a station or terminal…or on board ships and trains. They greet passengers and direct them to the proper boarding area…or even escort them to their seats or cabins. Attendants are often responsible for handling tickets and recording the number of people boarding and leaving. Good communication and problem solving skills are important. Attendants need to be able to answer a wide variety of travel-related questions. They also play a vital role in passenger safety. Attendants must know how to use…and how to demonstrate… safety procedures and equipment. Customer service is part of the job as well. Attendants may serve food and beverages, or assist people in other ways. A friendly disposition helps when dealing with stressed out or tired passengers who are often in a hurry. Although training is usually gained on the job, employers may require a high school education or GED. Whether the trip is a short commute …or a faraway vacation, transportation attendants are there to help make it safer and more enjoyable.
