Much of what we read would be inaccurate and confusing if it weren’t for Proofreaders and Copy Makers.
They are the professionals who check and double check materials before they’re printed, or loaded onto computers.
It’s their job to carefully read through each and every sentence, looking for mistakes.
Proofreaders search for spelling, grammar and punctuation errors.
They also hunt for typographical and factual errors. Names, facts and statistics may need to be compared with reference materials to ensure accuracy.
Each mistake is marked…and then sent to authors, editors, or typesetters to be corrected.
The corrected work may be sent back to the proofreader to ensure that all the required changes were made.
In addition to strong reading and language skills, attention to detail, and patience are important. Pages may need to be re-read many times before all the errors are caught.
Tight deadlines may make the work stressful at times.
A college degree is usually preferred. And most employers will give training on the job.
Fewer openings will be available in the future. Advances in technology are making it easier for computers to find and correct errors. However, there are some mistakes a machine just can’t spot.
If you have an eye for detail, and love to read - consider a career as a Proofreader and Copy Marker.
