Geologists are scientists who study the planet Earth -- its composition, processes and history. The field is so vast, geologists tend to specialize, for example… Engineering geologists offer advice on major construction projects, such as dams and tunnels. Paleontologists study fossils found in geological formations to trace the evolution of plant and animal life and the geologic history of earth. Volcanologists investigate volcanoes…trying to learn how to predict future eruptions. Marine geologists study the ocean floor and create maps for marine explorers. Geologists collect information and specimens in the field, often in remote locations. That may require being out in all kinds of weather, under physically demanding conditions. Back in the lab, they analyze the samples with sophisticated equipment. They need excellent computer skills, to compile data, create models, and prepare reports. Familiarity with new technologies such as global positioning and geographic information systems is helpful. Those with a bachelors-degree usually assist senior geologists. Additional education and experience bring more independent assignments as well as advancement to supervisory positions. A Ph.D. is usually necessary for most high-level research positions. Geologists working in private industry, such as oil and gas exploration, can expect to earn higher salaries than those working in education or for the government. From finding natural resources…to predicting seismic upheavals, the work of Geologists helps people all around the world to better understand their world.
