In our machine-driven, high-tech world… …something that is painstakingly made by hand is special. Craft Artists create objects using raw materials, and a great deal of skill. While lots of people make things as a hobby…some people are able to “shape” their creativity into a career. They might go to an Art or Design school. Or apprentice themselves to an established artist. In either case, they work towards learning all the intricate details of their craft. For a potter, that means understanding the qualities of clay, and knowing how to work with special tools and glazes. Some crafts require physical strength. They all require patience, precision, a steady hand and a keen eye. Good business sense is often important, as well. Not only do you need to know how to make your craft, you need to find ways to put your creations in front of the public. They can be sold at galleries, studios, stores, and arts and crafts shows. Successful craft artists might receive grants, or commissions, to create more of their signature pieces. For many, it is not easy to earn a living as a craft artist. It’s often necessary to work other jobs… …to support your passion for creating. While machines and assembly lines can turn out a product by the thousands, it takes special skill to create objects that have their own unique personality and individuality.
