Special education school teachers play an important role in the education of children who are gifted or have any of a variety of learning or physical disabilities. Because they work with kids who often require immediate attention, special education teachers must be able to identify students’ unique needs quickly. Successful teachers are patient, kind-hearted, and responsible. They must be good communicators and be sensitive to the special individual needs of each student. In addition to teaching students basic subject material, a special education teacher’s responsibilities can range from working with educational technology (such as computers equipped with synthesized speech) to working closely with parents in reviewing and implementing new teaching and learning techniques. Outside the classroom, these teachers may meet with parents to discuss a student’s performance, or prepare lessons for a future day. If you are interested in this career, you might find it quite challenging. At times, you might have to deal with uncooperative or hostile children. But knowing you’re making a positive contribution to the educational, social, and moral development of these children can have a profound effect on the way you view your own life and the challenges you face.
